What’s Thanksgiving All About? – A Guide for International Students

For those of you interested in learning all about Thanksgiving and joining in the celebrations, here’s what you need to know!

Celebrated mostly in Canada and the US, Thanksgiving was originally about being thankful for the end of harvest season (harvest refers to the farmers bringing in their crops from the field). But for many Canadian families the tradition has changed and the focus is now to enjoy a large meal with family.

Since food is such a big part of this holiday, it’s common that Canadians might take hours to prepare the meal and it is sometimes served midday or late afternoon, to allow time to eat and enjoy all the delicious dishes.

The meal is usually centered around a large turkey with cranberry sauce and gravy. As for side dishes, squash, yams, mashed potatoes, corn, beans and peas are some of the traditional vegetables served. Apple cider is often drunk and pumpkin pie for dessert is a must for any Thanksgiving dinner.

After the meal, it’s time to relax and spend quality time with your family and friends. Every family is different but this time may involve board games, good conversation, or watching sports or a movie. You could also take a walk around the neighbourhood and enjoy the leaves changing colours.

It’s the perfect day to relax with your loved ones and enjoy a good home cooked meal.

Most businesses are closed on Monday including banks, LCBO and Beer Stores, libraries and supermarkets. However, The Eaton Centre and Vaughan Mills will be open if you want to do some shopping.

Happy Thanksgiving!
