Canadian Culture

Welcome to the place of hockey, maple syrup, and friendly people! Canada is a diverse and welcoming country known for its beautiful landscapes, vibrant cities, and unique culture. If you are new to Canada, it can be hard to figure out the cultural norms and social etiquette.

Social Etiquette

Canadians are generally polite and friendly. First meetings usually involve shaking hands, not hugging or kissing, it is polite to not initiate this unless the other person does. Canadians appreciate small chats and privacy. Do engage in small talk with colleagues, neighbours, and acquaintances. Don’t stand too close or invade someone’s personal space. Do arrive on time for appointments, meetings, and social gatherings. Don’t be late without a valid reason, as it is considered disrespectful.

Communication

Using profane language in certain settings is considered very inappropriate, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. Maintaining eye contact when speaking is a sign of attentiveness. Interrupting or talking over other is frowned upon. Do speak clearly and politely, don’t use profanity or derogatory language. Don’t use sarcasm or irony unless you know the other person will understand.

Work Culture

Adhering to professional standards and ethics is important. Being on time and looking professional is expected. Dressing conservatively and professionally in the workplace is the norm, and team collaboration is valued. Participate in team activities and contribute to the group effort, don’t isolate yourself or refuse to collaborate with others.

Food and Dining

Canada has a diverse food culture. Tipping between 15-18% is customary when dining out. In a group, paying for what you ordered is common. Do try Canadian cuisine, including poutine, maple syrup, and butter tarts. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or assistance with unfamiliar dishes.

Canadian Values and Beliefs

Canada is a diverse and multicultural country that values acceptance and inclusion. Cultural diversity is celebrated, and Canadians are proud of their unique identities. It is important to respect and appreciate the different cultures and traditions that make up Canadian society. Equality and human rights are fundamental values in Canadian society. Gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights are highly valued, and Canadians strive to create an inclusive and accepting community. Indigenous rights and reconciliation are also important issues in Canada. There is also a strong nature and outdoor recreation culture, and environmental conservation is a key priority. Recycling and waste managements are important in Canadian society.
