Ali Breaks Language Barriers As A Refugee In Canada

Just a little over a year ago, Ali arrived in Canada as a refugee from Syria, with the mission of adapting to a new country, culture, and language.

After his name was put forward by one of ILAC’s teachers, his dream of speaking English confidently started to come true as he received a scholarship to study at ILAC for 12 months. Now, 11 English levels and lots of friends and experiences later, he shared his story with us on his final day of school.

Ali came to ILAC expecting to improve his English skills, but he is now leaving with much more than that. He is the true example of an ILAC Success Story!

“At your school, I learned not only English. I learned the traditions and cultures of different nationalities. A little bit of every language since I have friends from different nationalities but I also learned the opportunity to be happier at all times.”

ILAC is characterized by its diversity, welcoming students from over 75 countries around the world. This allowed Ali to practise his newly gained skills and make long lasting friendships.

“The biggest success I have achieved in your school is to never give up ambition. I speak English and now I can put my thoughts into words and talk and walk in life.”

For Ali, learning English not only represents knowing a second language but also breaking a barrier and being able to settle comfortably in Canada, his new home.

“I think the most difficult stage in refugee life is the language that stands in the way of refugees. Thanks to God and thanks to the efforts of the school, the school owners, and the principal and teachers, I have passed the most difficult stage.”

His last day at ILAC was bittersweet, as it meant the end of one adventure but the beginning of a new one.

“In short, thank you ILAC School for a world filled with knowledge and adventure. ILAC is the sun that lights the path of success and learning.”

And this is just the beginning! Ali plans to continue his education in Canada by attending the University of British Columbia, and helping other students and refugees who cannot speak English very well to improve their skills. Keep Dreaming Big!
