1. Book the Test in Advance!

All registration must be done on the official IELTS Test Centre website: www.ielts.org or www.ieltscanada.ca in Canada. The best locations fill up quite fast, so book your test in advance to avoid missing deadlines or traveling to another location. The early bird catches the worm!

2. Get Enough Sleep the Night Before the Exam!

IELTS exam includes several parts, which are quite complicated and require a proper preparation. It’s not a matter of one night to prepare for this exam. Cramming the night before the exam will not work. So start preparing months ahead of time and sleep well before the exam.

3. Don’t Forget Your Documents!

You must have the same photo ID that you provided when applying for the exam. If you don’t have the required document, you will not be allowed to take the test. Make sure you spell your name exactly as it’s written on the English version of your ID.

4. Follow the Procedures!

You must follow certain procedures and rules of the IELTS test centre, otherwise you will be disqualified. Don’t try to cheat , don’t exchange anything with another person, ask the supervisor if you have any questions.

5. Take notes during the listening part!

Try to scan all the questions before the audio starts playing. You will have only one chance to listen to it. Listening to the audio, try to get a general idea and write down all the specific details, numbers and names as these data is very easy to forget.

6. Don’t waste time! Learn to scan and understand!

The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes which includes four parts: listening (30 minutes), reading (60 minutes), writing (60 minutes) and speaking (15 minutes). You may be asked to do the speaking part on a different day. Everything should be done at a reasonable speed. That’s why practice and preparation is very important. You should know how to scan text to get the gist and be able to answer the questions quickly.

7. Don’t underestimate the writing part!

The most difficult part is usually writing. You need to write minimum 150 words in Task 1 and 250 words in Task 2. If you write less, you loose marks. This part requires preparation and knowledge of certain requirements. Be precise and specific, keep to the topic set and demonstrate your ability to express your opinion by supporting them with facts.

8. Paraphrase!

When doing either writing or speaking part, always try to paraphrase the question asked. IELTS tests whether you can understand the given material and explain it in your own words.

9. Leave some time for the final copy!

If you used a rough copy, leave some time to rewrite everything you’ve written on the final copy, as it should look clean and neat.

10. Take the IETLS Preparation Course!

It’s quite difficult to prepare for the IELTS exam by yourself. Only a professional, i.e. a teacher, can fully prepare you for each part of the exam and correct your mistakes. The ILAC IELTS preparation course will ensure you have all the skills needed to take the test and achieve a desired score. Register right now: www.ilac.com/en-ca/register
